The idea that he'd risk all of his progress towards that revenge for the increase in profits Walt offers is difficult to believe.Ģ) Why does Mike keep working for Gus? He clearly wants to support his family, but it seems like he'd have saved up quiet a bit for them. Gus on Better Call Saul has a shitload of money already, and seems to build the Superlab more as a goal to get revenge on the cartel than for financial gain. The Gus we know on BCS has no reason to hire Walt when it so strongly jeopardizes his revenge plan. I'm sure this will change as we head into the final few episodes and Jimmy moves out of this kind of fence-sitting situation, and Mike will be put into some kind of situation where he is tested.Īs far as Mike's side of the show goes, there's two big questions I kinda have about how we get from Better Call Saul to Breaking Bad at the moment:ġ) Why does Gus hire Walt? He seems to care only about revenge on Hector. So, on both sides of the show you are in these kind of non-critical stages. Will something push him to stop caring, or does he already not care and we just haven't seen it yet? That's kind of the question with him right now. Mike still has further to go in terms of becoming the person we know from breaking bad - he was far colder about doing violence, the Mike we've seen on BCS so far hasn't really done any violence yet. Gus and Mike are putting something together, but there isn't much in terms of action or character progression happening here right now. We haven't seen him kill anyone for Gus, or be put into a dangerous situation, so things are just kind of going along smoothly. Mike's progression into his criminal life is further advanced - he's now working for Gus and so his transition into that world is relatively complete. I'm enjoying the season but I can't deny there's a bit of a meandering feeling about it. How satisfying this is to watch as it unfolds I suppose is up for debate. It is how they are choosing to express his progression - rather than having a 'moment', his descent into criminality and sleaze is happening with all these little cuts and scratches. ![]() He does something Saulish, then doubles back, then goes forward again. It's not surprising there is some discontent about what is essentially two steps forward one step back type storytelling with Jimmy. Now he's gone, we're moving towards the next phase of Jimmy's life - but we're not there. Chuck kind of was the glue for S1-3, at least for Jimmy's storyline and the other characters on that side of the show. ![]() The thing with the show just now is, this is a transitional period for pretty much all of the characters.
